Career Spotlight Panel: Hair and Make-up

Hair and Make-up: Online Session

In partnership with Into Film.

Hair and make-up roles are crucial to screen storytelling, however it's not something students necessarily 'study' as part of the media curriculum. Students who are interested in creative storytelling and visual effects may want to explore opportunities in the hair and make-up field.

The free Career Spotlight Panels webinar series from Film & TV Educators Network is back. Designed to help educators bridge the gap between industry and education, the autumn series will be delivered in partnership with Into Film. The series highlights key roles in the UK screen industries facing skills shortages, providing invaluable insights for teachers and careers advisors looking to enrich their curriculum and guide students into in-demand careers. Each session focuses on a different role or department, bringing together a panel of educators, as well as early-career and senior industry experts.

Hair and Make-up Department

Hair and make-up aren’t just about making people look good on camera (although that is a highly-honed skill in and of itself) — they’re a key storytelling tool, helping to convey information about characters, setting and theme. And yet, hair and make-up skills are rarely covered on film/media syllabi. Our panel will include Hannah WingHead of Hair and Makeup at London Screen Academy. and a hair, makeup and costume designer for film & TV. Her credits include work for ITV, the BBC, Channel 4 as well as Cartier, Burberry and Disney. She is also the author of The Vintage Beauty Parlour and the co author of The Vintage Fashion Bible. They will discuss:

  • the structure and hierarchy of the hair & make-up department in film & television

  • key skills aspiring hair & make-up artists or designers should develop, as well as routes into the role, and how to support students interested in hair & make-up careers

  • connections with the film/media curricula to improve student productions and career prospects.

This session is aimed at film/media teachers, careers advisors, and may also be of interest to hair and beauty educators. Whether your students dream of working behind the scenes or simply want to develop a more rounded understanding of all aspects of screen storytelling, this session is for you.
